Intermediate Hurling County League Division 4
Newcastle West 2-11 Drom-Broadford 0-15
The field was the venue on Saturday evening (June 22nd) and it was carpet like, ideal for the small ball game, on a dullish hurling friendly evening. The game itself was competitive, both teams flexing their muscles before eh resumption of the championships, county and west. At the end of the first half, we enjoyed a 5-point lead, 1-8 to 0-6. A comprehensive win looked on the cards. However, that easy win did not materialise, as Drom-Broadford came out of the blocks at pace on the resumption, hurling with the flair and fire that is association with their club since the days of the famous Derry McCarthy, Donie Broderick, Martin Geary – county men all legends of the camán. By minute 56, the gap was down to 0-3, 2-11 to 0-14, as they out scored us 0-8 to 1-3. However, they found only 0-1 in the final four minutes and we improved our position on the point table. All in all, a lovely game on a hurling-friendly evening, skill in abundance, competitive, a good bit of bite in the proceedings, big effort by all the players, John McGrath (himself a star hurler/footballer in the 70’s and 80s) in charge of the whistle.

Newcastle West GAA people will travel to the Gaelic Grounds in big numbers on Sunday 30th, anticipating high quality hurling and hoping for two wins by the boys in green. They will have particular interest in the minor game (11.30am) with three from the club involved, Ethan Hurley and Michael Cremin (players) and Pa Keane (Stats). Ethan, No. 6/centre back, pivot in four games so far, will start unless there is a major rethink, Michael a first start v. Tipperary due to an injury to captain and full back Michael Keane will start (probably) if the captain remains on the injured list, Pa will deliver the vital info that could change the course of the game. Whatever the outcome (Limerick pipped their opponents in round 3), it is a big, big day for the lads and their team and all in the Club wish them the best of luck.

The end of the road, end of the season for Billy Lee (manager), players Ian Corbett (0-1), (Captain) and Jamie Lee (0-6) and backroom staff Austin Geraghty and James Hennessy at Mullingar on Saturday last. All gave it their best shot in League and Championship. One can do no more. Well done all, back now to the club fare with the resumption of the championship. Fare forward.

U14 Football 13 aside County Final
Congratulations to Pa Coffey’s team at drenching, breezy and cold Mick Neville Park on Sunday 23rd on winning the county final against Mountcollins . The Dean had lost to Mountcollins earlier in the competition but were well in control on Sunday, scoring at will, freely, especially in the second half. Those familiar with Newcastle West football and its premier status at adult (senior) and underage level, will wonder why Newcastle West are operating at this low level – the home of the smaller clubs who struggle for numbers or for clubs who’s main GAA game is hurling! Whatever the story, a good win for the club’s U14 footballers who played quality peil! Both the U14 and U12 panels combined during the completion to ensure that the team progressed over the course of the group matches well done to all. Match report hopefully in next week’s edition.
U12 Hurling vs Rathkeale/Croagh/Kilfinny
Neville shines in THRILLA in KILFINNA. Our U12 hurlers made the short trip to Croagh/ Kilfinny’s ground on Thursday last (June 20th) to seek revenge for a comprehensive loss to the same outfit in football one week earlier. In near perfect weather conditions for hurling on a brilliant playing field, there could be no excuses and our lads settled very quickly. While the opposition had some real talent across the field, the NCW boys were up for the battle and harried and hounded brilliantly making excellent blocks & hooks all over the field. Ashton Neville made the switch from his customary full back position to number 14 and it wasn’t long before his impact was felt as he was outstanding from the first whistle.
With our backline proving very hard to breakdown and our midfield of Jack Gallagher & Paul Logue delivering good ball in, the full forward line were proving too hot to handle the scoreboard was never idle for long. Declan O’Grady who started in goals was delivering pinpoint puck outs to our half forward line of Killian McAuliffe , Sean Fitzgerald & Darragh Doherty and this in turn meant that we were transferring the ball very quickly into the red zone for Ashton & Luke Scanlon to profit. Conor Lyons & Diarmuid Cremin in the full back line were dogged in every tackle and the Croagh lads had to work extremely hard for every score. NCW supporters were justified in their optimism when the referee blew up the first 15 minute period as we had high quality in the form of Rory Vaughan, Leon O’Flynn & Darragh O’Keeffe in reserve. All three were introduced & soon showed why they would normally be starters. Leon was his usual busy self around the middle of the field with Rory slotting in well in the back line and Darragh always posing a danger to the opposition when in possession. Evan Crowley, Darragh Tierney & Jake Ri Ri won practically every battle that came their way in the half back line and it looked like the NCW boys would run out easy winners until a few quick goals against us made for a nervy last third. Luckily for us Ashton wasn’t finished and by the time the referee reached for the final whistle he had totted up a brilliant 4-3 all from play to get us the win. These boys deserve a huge amount of praise for their display as they competed brilliantly for every ball throughout. Other scorers for us on the night were Paul Logue 1-0, Declan O’Grady 1-0, Sean Fitzgerald 1-0, Darragh O’Keeffe 1-0, Killian McAuliffe 0-1.

U16 Hurling challenge v Newtownshandrum
Last Monday evening (June 24th) at the field, A challenge v Newtownshandrum although a one-sided affair, quality hurling from our lads more than holding their own, allowed the team to get back in action as a unit. The lads combined well in this challenge with some good passing movements and some good running at the Newtown defense. With the forwards taking their scores well and with accuracy. A few players still out with niggly injures so hopefully back to full strength come Monday. With the examination break now over the U16 hurlers are back to competitive hurling on Monday next v Patrickswell. (1st July). Several of this U16 team are with the county U16s, namely Ethan Hurley (also with the county minors and centre back on that team), Michael Blaskiv, Leon Barry, Jack O’Connor. Conn Hayes is a County U15 man also and not far off are Aaron Neville, John O’Grady, Seán Dorley, Donal Bourke, Sean Geraghty, Oisín Collins. All the players are dual, good footballers, also some with the county, overall a lovely U16 team, mixing it and holding their own with the Doons, Na Piarsaigh, Mungret, Patrickswell and Monaleen. Good luck on Monday and for the rest of the season.
Under 6 Training
A brilliant session last Friday (21st) 6pm to 7.30pm at the all-weather pitch, fun-filled and lively with skill developing and enhancing. Football, hurling and movement led by coaches Pa O’Connor, Micheál Reidy, Michael O’Grady, Donie Gleeson, Declan Brouder, Jonathan Carey, Niall O’Connor. A big involvement of parents, moms and dads central to the goalkeepers v. strikers’ action at the tyres and the ‘kick across the river’ football!
As good and enjoyable an U6 session as we have been involved in and setting the bar high! There is more of the same on Friday next and new players are always welcome. The grip striking on the ground off both sides, (maybe off the hand also), the tackle and dribble are the skills being emphasised/developed in hurling, while kicking with either foot, catching, toe-to-hand and the pickup are emphasised in the peil. It goes without saying that the player who practices at home and becomes “addicted” to the sport will improve dramatically!

Summer Camp
Newcastle West GAA Summer Camp will take place from Monday 1st July to Friday July 5th, 2019. Due to unprecedented numbers that have pre-registered for the camp the camp is now full. The cost for the camp is €65 and there will be a second payment night this Wednesday evening (June 26th) in the clubhouse to allow those that have registered to pay for the camp in full before it commences. If you wish to order gear only (the kit NCW Jersey, shorts and socks) cost is EUR50 and those orders will also be taken on Wednesday night.
