Junior B Hurling West Championship Round 1

Newcastle West v Dromcollogher-Broadford

Scheduled for Collyroe last Thursday this above game was cancelled (as were all west board fixtures) as a mark of respect to the late Jim Lynch, assistant secretary of the West Limerick GAA Board. All in the club extend sympathy to the Lynch family on the death of the well-known and popular Granagh-Ballingarry GAA Gael who gave outstanding service to club, division and county and to the games of hurling and football. May he rest in peace.

With the County

It was a tough Saturday evening for Billy Lee (manager), Jamie Lee (0-1), Ian Corbett (Captain) and Limerick Leeside as they lost out to Cork in the Munster semi-final. Cork were the better team and had the game won at half-time courtesy of an explosive start. So it’s on to the qualifiers for Limerick, with ambition to progress as far as they can and get the very maximum out of themselves. They’ll give it their all. No one can do anymore.

The minor hurlers (Ethan Hurley centre back, Michael Cremin on the bench, Pa Keane on stats) rescued their season with a late-late equaliser, while the senior hurlers drove a nail in the Deise coffin with a confident high scoring display and a big win. The Banner seniors and the unbeaten Banner minors come to the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday next and earthquakes won’t be in it with them as they and Limerick battle for Championship survival.

The Limerick U20 football team, prepping for the upcoming Munster Championship and with new players Lee Woulfe, Lee St. John, Niall Kelleher, and Brian Foley on board, are taking part in a special Leinster league and were away to Offaly on Wednesday evening last. A narrow defeat for the boys in green was the outcome.

Match Reports

U 14 Hurling Division 3B v Askeaton (May 29)

Our 14 hurlers travelled to Askeaton last Wednesday evening for next round of the u 14hurling championship. It was our best performance of the year to date. We had a fantastic first half leading 3-5 to 3-1 at the break before finally losing 3-9 to 3-5 in a great battle. Darragh Tierney was brilliant in goals saving well and as always intelligent and cool with the puck outs. Our backs Sean Ambrose, Jack Gleeson and Patrick Noonan were solid in the full back line. Half back line of Niall Doherty, Diarmuid Lyons and Darragh O Grady were fantastic. Midfield Neilas and Evan battled tirelessly all evening. Half forwards Cathal Hayes and Reece Daly fought for everything and full forward line of Johnny Kelly ,Andrew Lyons and Ashton Neville got some great scores. Overall the team are beginning to come together and we'll continue training hard for the summer. Credit to all that played they did themselves proud.

U12 Football League v St. Kierans (May 30)

Our under 12 team were on the road again last Thursday evening making the short trip to Coolcappa to face a skillful St. Kieran’s team on a great evening for football. There was nothing between the sides throughout the encounter, but it must be said that the Ardagh boys showed a little more cunning, especially with their movement off the ball and ability to find a pass. There were times in this game where the supporters may have thought they were in Thomond Park as the referee seemed eager to ‘Let the game flow’. There were some bruising encounters all over the pitch & both sets of players deserve huge credit for the level of intensity & determination shown. We began brightly & soon had our reward with a well taken point from Darragh Tierney. Kieran’s responded well and two quick goals gave them the upper hand without either team really dominating. Some outstanding defending from both teams with Ashton Neville at full back for us not giving an inch physically and Sean Fitzgerald in goals mopping up any loose ball around the parallelogram meant that scores were hard come by and this was the trend for the most part throughout the game. Robert O’Grady at half forward chased and harried like a terrier and no doubt slept well after having run himself into the ground for the whole 45 minutes. While the possession stats may show that this was an even affair, our passing left us down on several occasions and we wasted good possession letting our opposition off the hook more than once. Darragh O’Keeffe provided some lovely touches when introduced and added a point from a well taken free before Darragh Tierney scored his second late on. Goals win games however and we failed to find the net which was really the deciding factor in this result. This game was played at a ferocious intensity and parents and coaches were held captive throughout. The boys from both teams cannot be praised enough for the display of commitment shown on the pitch. To a man our players put their bodies on the line and with better tactical awareness and some more accuracy with our passing I have no doubt the result would have been different. Other notable performances came from Tristan Kirwan & Conor Lyons. We would also like to wish a speedy recovery to the St Kieran’s player who suffered a collarbone injury during the game.

Team: Sean Fitzgerald, Darragh Doherty, Ashton Neville, Mark Healy, Leon O’Flynn, Paul Logue, Sean Lyons, Evan Crowley, Declan O’Grady, Conor Lyons, Jake Ri Ri, Jack Gallagher, Tristan Kirwan, Robert O’Grady, Darragh Tierney, Cillian McAuliffe, Darragh O’Keeffe.

U10 Hurling Challenge

Thanks to Monagea U10 hurlers who played us in a challenge match last Tuesday, May 28th. We were treated to a display of some great skills from both teams on a fine evening for hurling. We have organised another Hurling Challenge match for the boys next Sunday morning, June 9th against Ballybrown before we head into the Gaelic Grounds to watch Limerick take on Clare in the Munster Hurling Championship.

U8 Football Blitz

Our first U8 football blitz of the year took place on Friday the 24th May evening in our home pitch in NCW and also in the back pitch in Pairc Amuigh . All the boys enjoyed their evening, playing against all the other teams in West Limerick. All the boys put in a great effort, our teams where a mixture of the older boys born in 2012 and the younger boys that have just joined the U8 ranks. Under 6 Training

Training continues at the all-weather on Fridays from 6pm-7pm. Football and hurling are on the agenda and under the capable guidance of the various coaches, - all experienced former players, many with the county, the skills of the “new kids on the block” are constantly improving. Holding the hurley properly (dominant hand on top), striking on the ground off both sides, the tackle, stopping the ball (with one touch!), maybe the solo and striking off the hand are the skills being emphasised in hurling, while catching the ball (fielding high like the great Mick O’ Connell fado), kicking with either foot, toe-to-hand, solo, run, and the pickup are the main football skills being drilled. Already, even with one hour per week one can see the improvement. If there is practise at home then there will be bigger improvement. New players are always welcome.

Coaching in the Primary Schools

Hurling at present. An ideal location with all the pupils getting an opportunity to experience the game and learn the basic skills. The more and the more often it happens the better for the club (and school and pupils) though not all move on to play with the club. Central to the whole thing is the willingness of club people/coaches who might have a bit of time on their hands between 9 and 3 to get Garda vetted and get involved.

Examinations

With the U16’s and minor teams now on examination break we would like to wish the very best of luck to all of our players sitting Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate exams in the coming weeks . Don’t forget when in need of a break from the study a puck around or a kick about might just be the tonic needed. Go n-eiri libh.

Summer Camp

Newcastle West GAA Summer Camp will take place from Monday 1st July to Friday July 5th. The camp is available to all children born between 2005 and 2013. The cost for the camp is €65. CAMOGIE FEILE 2019

The club wishes the U14 girls from the NCW camogie club the very best in the All Ireland Feile comortas+ this weekend (7th June). These are an exceptionally talented bunch of girls competing at the highest level in the Feile in Division 1 and will be based in the heart land of Cork camogie in Aghada East Cork. Strong sibling links of course to the GAA club with Robyn Lyons, Lilly Duggan, Rebecca Cremin, Ciara McAuliffe, Clodagh O’Keeffe, Kate Foley, Olivia Noonan, Eabha Collins, Rebecca Fitzgibbon and Ashling Curtin all having brothers playing or played with the club. Great sports families indeed. The team were also recently crowned county league champions and will do Limerick and Newcastle West proud in the Feile. Enjoy the camogie girls, enjoy the occasion, embrace new friendships, make long lasting memories and above all have fun playing the game you all love.
