Intermediate Hurling Co. League Div 4
The Inters were away to Monagea on Sunday. A nice dry evening with a bit of a bite in it, weatherwise. The game was competitive 100% with plenty of bone-crushing tackles and thou shall not pass defending. There was plenty of lovely skill also. Our lads built on the previous week’s win over Killeedy with a panel as follows: Leigh Fitzgerald, Mike Mulcahy, Maurice Murphy, Colm Foley, Lee Woulfe 0-1, Stephen Nix, Niall Enright, Seamus Hurley, Darragh McMahon, Eoin Hurley 0-2, Mike McMahon 0-1, Andrew Curtin, Brian Hurley 1-0, Michael Quilligan 1-9, Brian Nix 0-1. Subs Dylan O’Connell, Richard Kelleher, Conor O’Sullivan, Ryan Sheehan and Mike Carroll. Quix, not for the first time was the star of the show from a scoring point of view accounting for 1-9 (a tour de force) from play and frees, of our total and Dylan O’Connell prominent at all grades under age since U-8 won his first adult cap, coming on a second half sub and doing very well to a new more demanding environment.
On Saturday evening last we hosted Tournafulla on a beautiful sunny evening the field in pristine condition. The game had textbook hurling, beautiful execution of the basic skills, catching, striking movement, etc. maybe a bit slack in the marking and minus the bite of do or die championship fare, but the connoisseurs of the of the world’s fastest field game would have been purring. It was Barcelona hurling (a local aficionado). If he was right young Brian Nix was our Lionel Messi, scoring 2-5 before exiting with an injury 10 minutes or so into the second half we were 3-9 to 0-5 ahead at half-time. Our scoring rate dropping in the second 30 minutes due to the departure of Brian, the emptying of the bench and Tour’s rally.

This week on Friday we are away to Feenagh/Kilmeedy, a club that always produces good hurleys. More Barcelona hurling maybe.

Hard luck to the boys in green at Pairc na nGael on Sunday, with Cork the better team, especially in the last 20 minutes. Hopefully the team that brought such joy to the county in 2018 will be able to recover and do the business in Walsh Park (v Waterford), Pairc na nGael (v Clare) and v Tipperary in Semple Stadium. Sometimes a defeat is a blessing in disguise (as Shakespeare said “sweet are the uses of adversity”. Whatever happens the team gave us a wonderful 2018 and 2019 (National League champions) and for that we will always be thankful. Limerick play Waterford in Walsh Park next Sunday week.

Excellent in the win over Tipperary against the odds, can Limerick take down the favourites and qualify for the final. Time will tell. Billy Lee, manager, Iain Corbett, captain and Jamie Lee , players are the Newcastle West people involved. We wish them the best of luck.

For Ethan Hurley, Michael Cremin and Pa Keane was a big day in their sporting lives to date. All have been club players in football and hurling for years. On Sunday last their hurling careers moved up several gears, as all three were involved with the Limerick minor hurling team; up 5 points coming down the straight but allowed Cork off the hook at the Gaelic Grounds. Ethan lined out at centre back and had a solid game, holding the middle in the traditional way (like his dad Willie not so long ago, and big brother William with our intermediates now), Michael was on the bench (he is Eoin’s son and grandson of full forward Mike of the 1960s) and Pa (dual player and mentor with many Magpie teams) was keeping the vital stats that help improve individual and team performance. All in the club congratulate the three lads giving of their very best in the daunting arena that is inter county, where you’ll be quickly ‘found out’ if you’re not up to it, psychologically, physically, temperamentally, skills wise, etc. Last week it was Billy, Iain and Jamie to the fore with the Limerick senior football team. This week well done to Ethan, Michael and Pa and the Limerick minor hurlers v Waterford in 2 weeks time and away is next.

JUVENILE CLUB
Congratulations!!
Congrats to Diarmuid Lyons, son of Magpie legend Kevin of Fado, Fado, who played in the high quality primary schools game at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday. Diarmuid, a pupil at the Courtenay Boys NS gave an excellent account of himself. He plays U-14 with the club and is a class footballer also.
Well done to Ethan Hurley (U16) and Michael Cremin (Minor) whom were part of the Limerick Minor Hurling panel that drew with Cork in the Gaelic Grounds last Sunday (19th)
Good luck to Aaron Neville and Sean Geraghty (U16s) whom are part of U15 Limerick Football panel whom play Westmeath in LIT on Saturday next (25th) at 1.30pm.

Under 10 football blitz report from Ballingarry , 17th May
On a sunny Friday evening (which is hopefully going to become the norm) ideal for football, 17 members of our under 10 team met in Ballingarry for a football blitz. We split the boys into two teams and headed into battle. Team 1 had the measure of Fennagh-Kilmeedy and played an exceptional brand of football against a very strong team in their first match. Team 2 had a right ding dong with local neighbours Knockaderry and gave a great account of themselves although the result did not go our way. Our round two matches were against Feoghnagh Castlemahon for team 1 and Granagh Ballingarry A for team 2, again both teams played a great style of football, always moving the ball forward to get the scores that would get them across the line. Our final match then was a combined effort against Granagh Ballingarry B. It’s fair to say that all spectators were treated to a great game served up by both teams, with nobody sure what the final result was, it was decided to call it a draw.

The scoreline at the final whistle flatters the visitors as the young Newcastlewest Footballers showed great determination to keep in touch with the team that fancied to do well in the U12 Division. Drom started much better and were 1-3 to no score after just 6 minutes of the first period before Sean Lyons linked well with Christopher O'Doherty to fire home from close range. The score drove Newcastlewest on and we saw some lovely play from Darragh Doherty passing to Paul Logue who’s effort was waved wide. Shortly after Robert O'Grady chased down a loose Drom ball in midfield that ended up with Sean Lyons bursting the net yet again to even the match. Right at the death of the first period Sean Fitzgerald was called on to race out of goals as Drom had worked a 2v1 overlap and he blocked bravely to stop a certain goal.
Drom started the second period strong and soon were 2 points up (2-0 to 1-5). Quick thinking from Jack Gallagher in goals taking a quick kick out found Tristan Kirwan in space in midfield. Tristan worked the ball up the right to Darragh O'Keefe who found Paul Logue who finished with a cracker of a goal to put the Magpies into the lead (3-0 to 1-5). Unfortunately, the lead didn't last long with Drom responding immediately with a goal (3-0 to 2-5). On the next Drom attack Jack Gallagher came of his line to superbly gather, and clear, a dangerous high ball. The ball again was worked efficiently up the field to Leon O'Flynn who sent over Newcastlewest's first point of the match to reduce the lead to a single point (3-1 to 2-5). The second period ended with a Drom point to take a 2 point lead going into the final 15 minutes.
Unfortunately it wasn't long into the final period and we were well and truely playing catch up. Drom's added 2-1 before Patrick Ryan chipped over a nice point to leave the home side trailing (3-2 to 4-6). Drom drove on again with another 2 goals before Sean Lyons was on target, again linking well with Christopher O'Doherty, to slot home his hat trick. Sean finished the Newcastlewest scoring with a point as Drom added a few more points to their impressive final period haul.

Newcastle West dominated for large periods finishing the first and second halves in the lead only to be pipped right at the death.
We were slow to settle into the match and found ourselves 2 points down with only 2 minutes on the clock. That was to be the last Knockaderry score in the first period. Tristan Kirwan tracked back well from his midfield duties to get in a block on a shot (that looked a certain goal) with Sean Fitzgerald (in goals) completing the clearance. Patrick Ryan at full back gave an exhibition in the art of blocking. Not only was he blocking the ball expertly, he was winning the ball in the tackle and offloaded good ball to his half backs and midfield. The first Newcastlewest attack saw Cormac Noonan fouled following a nice solo run. Declan O’Grady kicked a point from the free. Declan followed up with (now his trademark) a classic ‘full forward’ goal. At the end of the first half the magpies were up 1-1 to 0-2.
Declan O’Grady and substitute Shay Collins narrowly missed chances for goals at the start of the second half. But first off the mark were the visitors retaking the lead with a goal. Knockaderry launched a dangerous counter attack that looked like it would extend their lead but the ever reliable Diarmuid Cremin never gave up the chase and got the measure of the Knockaderry man, blocking down his shot. What followed was without doubt was the best move of the match, Mark Healy at fullback gathered the ball and passed to Leon O’Flynn who’s strength saw him brush off his tackler to find Rory Vaughan in midfield. Rory sold a dummy to send his marker the wrong way before passing to his midfield partner Tristan Kirwan. Tristan kicked a high ball that no-one but Declan O’Grady was going to field and found the net to finish off this brilliant move that started with Diarmuid’s block down. Tristan was in action for the final play of the half putting the ball over the black spot extending the magpies lead 2-2 to 1-2.
Adam Nolan was close to extending the lead at the start of the 3rd half coming close with a well taken shot. A Knockaderry goal drew the visitors level but not for long as Declan (for a second week in a row) netted for his hat trick. Knockaderry drew level once more with 3 points without reply, the score reading 3-2 to 2-5 with 5 minutes left to play. Newcastlewest moved the ball up front again to Sean Fitzgerald who rounded his man and headed for goal. With only goal in his mind Sean let fly and found the back of the net to send the home side back into the lead. The herculean effort the young Newcastlewest men was starting to take a toll and couldn’t hold off the final Knockaderry onslaught who finished strong kicking 2 points and took the lead with a goal that might well have been flagged for a Hawkeye review. Well done to Knockaderry who ran out 2 point winners 4-2 to 3-7.

Under 6 Training
Up and running at the all weather on Fridays 6p.m.-7.15p.m. approx. Well organised and with quality coaches in Pa O’Connor, Micheal Reidy, Declan Brouder, Donie Gleeson, Michael O’Grady, etc and dads and moms giving a hand also. The more the merrier and if all buy in to the process, bring along their own hurleys, learn as they go, things will be ar muin na muice. Football – catch, kick with either foot off the ground, off the hand, high field, block, pick-up, toe to hand are the skills to be mastered in Peil, while the 6 year old who can get the grip right (writing hand-dominant at the top), strike on the ground and off the hand of both sides, so a small solo tackle, etc. will be getting a call from John Kiely. New players are always welcome. The ball alley/all weather are the venues, a perfect venue for small lads.
Coaching in the Primary Schools
Hurling at present. An ideal location with all the pupils getting an opportunity to experience the game and learn the basic skills. The more and the more often it happens the better for the club (and school and pupils) though not all move on to play with the club. Central to the whole thing is the willingness of club people/coaches who might have a bit of time on their hands between 9 and 3 to get Garda vetted and get involved.
Summer Camp
Newcastle West GAA Summer Camp will take place from Monday 1st July to Friday July 5th. The camp is available to all children born between 2005 and 2013. The cost for the camp is €65. This includes 5 days of camp and Newcastle West GAA gear of jersey, shorts and socks. Registration events will be held as an opportunity for the children to try on sample gear for sizing to ensure you purchase the correct gear.
