Inter hurlers advance at Knockaderry

Knockaderry was the venue on Saturday evening last. We expected a down to the wore that would have kept spectators on their toes, but it didn’t materialize. Killeedy were under strength, we had most of our first teamers and it became quickly apparent that we would be advancing to the next round. Our first score, a point by Brian Nix, arrived in the first minute and at half time we were 3-13 to 0-4 ahead, the result of ‘nice’ hurling by our lads but reflective also of Killeedy’s under strength. We have never scored 3-13 against Killeedy in a half hours hurling and limited them to 0-4 in the same 30 minutes (generally the boot has been on the other foot and we have been on the receiving end) Jack Aherne’s arrival changed the dynamic in the second half a god bit. We score a mere 0-6, Killeedy found the target on 8 occasions. Had Jack been on the start, would the game have been more competitive, the score closer? Though the game wasn’t close, it had nice hurling of the kind presented by the current Limerick team – good striking, precision, passing, intelligent movement of the ball etc, all the smalls that excited the county in 2018 and many have it in agonies and ecstasies this year also. It helped our team get back on the horse after our below par and undistinguished Co Championship v Croom 2 weeks ago. ‘Sweet are the uses of adversity’.

Team: Leigh Fitzgerald, Colm Foley. Maurice Murphy, captain, Mike Mulcahy, Sean Browne, Stephen Nix, Niall Enright, Seamus Hurley, Darragh McMahon (0-1), Mark Kelly, Mike McMahon (0-1), Eoin Hurley (0-2), Brian Nix (3-6), Mike Quilligan (0-6), Aaron McCarthy (0-1). Subs: Brian Hurley (0-2), Stephen Brosnan, Ross Donovan, Ryan Sheehan.

Mungret/St Paul’s……2-23

Our 16s played a very strong Mungret side Monday 29th April. We knew it was going to be difficult task given Mungret are going for a third county in a row with this group of players.

On the night Mungret were much stronger but in fairness to our boys they battled and kept going to the end. The hurlers’ next competitive match is first July v Patrickswell and we hope to regroup and challenge hard for the rest of the season.

Panel: Patrick Noonan Sweeney, Ethan Kirwan, Aaron Neville, Sean Geraghty, Michael Blashkiv, ack O’Connor, John Whelan, Con Hayes, Donal Burke, Tyler Clancy, Leon Barry, Eddie Ward, Brian Coughlan, John O’Grady, Sean Turley, Ethan Hurley, Oisin Enright, Paudie Kelly, Harry Edwards, James Lyons. Oisin Collins (injured). Mentors: Tom Ryan, Eoin Cremin and Roger Hayes.

U16 Football Division 1 Round 3 06.05.19

Newcastle West…….9-11

Monaleen……………….0-3

A bright sunny Monday bank holiday evening was the setting for the U16s latest league match at home v Monaleen. Monaleen started the brighter but within 10 minutes of the start it was all one way traffic. Eddie Ward in particular was on fire on the night finishing the match with a hat trick of goals and a few points under his belt. Paudie Kelly at the other end also deserves a special mention as he played a stormer in goals. Positioning himself very well for some great body block saves and handling dropping ball effortlessly. Overall it was a great team display with some lovely passages of football with the magpie boys finding their men well and running off the shoulder for each other. Some great point taking saw all of the forwards getting on the score sheet. With the goals coming from Eddie, Tyler Clancy,Oisin Enright,Oisin Collins and two from Patrick Noonan Sweeney. His last goal from a penalty following a foot block getting special mention for his ‘coolness personified’ finishing to the bottom corner of the net. The defence and midfield also worked hard right through the game especially as the Monaleen midfielders made some dangerous runs through the middle. But there was no way through the NCW defence and may of the scores came from well worked ball from the defense through midfield and onto the forward line. Probably a disappointing and unexpectedly poor challenge from Monaleen but a good performance from Newcastle West with St Kieran’s up next on Monday 12th before the examination break.

Panel: Paudie Kelly, Aaron Neville, Donal Bourke, Sean Thorley, Jack O’Connor, John Whelan,Con Hayes, Leon Barry, Michael Blashkiv, John O’Grady, Oisin Enright, Sean Geraghty, Tyler Clancy, Eddie Ward ,Paul Begley, James Lyons, Oisin Collins and Patrick Noonan Sweeney. Ethan Hurley (county commitments), Ethan Kirwan (injured) and Harry Edwards (sick). Mentors: Martin Mullane, Mike McMahon, Mike O’Leary, Austin Geraghty.

U 14 Division 3 Hurling v St Kieran’s 01.05.09

Newcastle West.........5-3

St. Kkieran’s..............4-9

We had a great battle as always with our near neighbor’s St Kieran’s last Wednesday (May 1st). An epic battle with one puck separating us at the end. It was fantastic to see a full panel togged out and hopefully numbers will continue for rest of the season

U8 Hurling Blitz 03.05.19

Our first U8 blitz of the year took place last Friday evening in sunny Raheenagh . In what was a well-run blitz by local GDA David O’Dea.
