RESOLUTE JUNIOR Bs DIG DEEP!
Coolcappa was the venue on Saturday evening last and Martin Doherty refereed. Conditions were excellent and the game was well contested from beginning to end with 100% effort by each and every player and sportsmanship of a high order. Our lads played their best hurling of the entire campaign, gave game time to almost the entire panel and were deserving winners.
Goals win matches and we scored three in the first half. They came at 5, 26 and 30, with Richard Kelleher scoring the first and third and Stephen Brosnan’s strike from the wing deceived the goalie for the second. Richard’s second goal was classic. Stephen delivered the cutting edge shoulder high pass to Richard who caught and struck with speed and the sliothar was in the back of the net before you could say Aaron Gillane! Three of the four points were scored by very accurate free-taker Mikie Carroll at 3, 23 and 27 with Stephen, who was central to the win, getting the fourth point at 33. A mere 0-3 separated the team at half time, the puck of a ball!
No spectator was leaving for home!
Askeaton levelled one minute into the second half. Points at 32 and 35 by free-taker Mikie, Diarmuid Kelly (on at half time, a great hurler, very talented) and
Hardworking Aaron McCarthy levelled. Mikie converted another free at 15 and we were 0-1 ahead as the teams battled into the final 15 minutes. It was anybody’s game at this stage, the tension was really mounting up.
The arrival from the subs’ bench of Diarmuid Kelly and Darren Doherty was the catalyst that swung the game our way. Diarmuid scored 0-2, won a lot of possession, gave clever assists for a number of scores, ‘Doc’ scored 1-1. A third sub Ross Donovan touched over at 55, Mikie brought his game total to 0-7 and very effective midfielder Darragh McMahon drove through for 0-1 at 22. This 1-6 purple passage broke the back of the stubborn Askeaton challenge and ensured that the cup and title were on the way to the Town on the Arra, a fully deserved success after a serious challenge from Akeaton. All of our lads played their parts in the win from goalie Conor O’Sullivan to unused sub Jack Nash. The attitude was spot on, all the players worked hard, gave 100%, put in the tackles, hooks, blocks without which no titles are won, they showed plenty of skill, battled for every ball and put ‘bodies on the line’ as they say. As we said above, it was the team’s best display in the competition and well done to all.

Full credit to mentors John Hurley and Neilus Sheehy who worked so hard to get a team out (no easy task!) and were well rewarded for their commitment and persistence by the display and the win. Full marks also to first aider Margaret Delee, a reassuring presence on the sideline. Their contribution was acknowledged in his post match cúpla focal by inspirational captain Stephen Nix who accepted the cup from West Board chairman Johnny Walsh. All in all, a great display and a great win by our Junior B hurlers after a 5-game campaign that included a Round 1 win over Drom/Broadford, a w.o. to Tournafulla, a w.o Killeedy, a semi final win over Feohanagh/Castlemahon and last Saturday v Askeaton.
In the county semi final we oppose the city winners.
Note: special congratulations to Seánie Gleeson who, like the great Mickey Linden of Down continues to defy time and make himself available for selection and Davy Hurley, approaching veteran player who was an effective goalkeeper in the semi final when Conor O’S. was unavailable.
U14 Football 13-a-side round 2 24.04.19
St Patrick's 2-3 Newcastle West 6-3
We had the drive to St Patrick's on Wednesday 24th in poor conditions. Heavy rain started just as we left Newcastle West. We were lucky it settled just as we arrived. We were up against a good strong side with some fine footballers in their team. We got off to a slow start, down 3 points after 10 minutes. We were up against a very physical team but our lads had the football to make a game of it. We got our first goal on 12 minutes with a lovely combination between Niall Doherty and Diarmuid Lyons with Diarmuid sticking it in the top corner, 1-0 to 0-3 and we were off the mark. Once we had the ball up the lads kept it there; Leon Lenihan sent a lovely ball to Andrew Lyons who put it away nicely, and shortly after that on came Diarmuid with a cracking ball from Paul Logue into the bottom corner: Newcastle West 3-0 St Patrick's 0-3. Unfortunately St. Patrick's scored a great goal just before the break. We started strongly in the second half. Mariuz, having a great game in goal, made some great saves; Patrick Noonan and Ethan Coffey were outstanding in the full back line; Sean Ambrose, Niall O’ Doherty and Darragh O’ Grady in the half back line all played out of their skin, and the two engines in midfield, Neilas and Leon, with nonstop running controlled the tempo of the game. The half forward line of Andrew Lyons, Diarmuid Lyons and Paul Logue had an outstanding game, and the full forward line of Reece Daly and Aston Neville all wanted the ball. It wasn't long before Andrew found the net again with two fast goals in quick succession. The lads were in full swing with Darragh O’ Grady putting over a well taken free. St Patrick's responded with another goal: game on. It didn't take long for us to get up the field again with Paul Logue hitting the post with a screamer of a shot, and Darragh O’ Doherty was unlucky not to put away the rebound. The lads kept pushing for more; Diarmuid scored another outstanding team goal, everyone moving the ball around with speed and precision. We put over another two points before the whistle. It finished up 6-3 to 2-3 to Newcastle West, altogether a great team performance from the lads. Mountcollins are next, on Wednesday 8th May at the field. Overall a great display of football from the lads, keep up the good work.

Work to be done
On Thursday evening our U12 hurlers took the field against a strong St Kieran’s team in good hurling conditions on a pristine home pitch. This was a slight venture into the unknown as it was our first outing of the year and we hoped to get off to a good start. It was the guests who hit the ground running, however, and we struggled to contain their dominance in the middle of the pitch. Despite some outstanding defending from our captain Darragh Tierney we found ourselves down several goals very early on and were playing catch up from the off. It took 15 minutes for us to settle and once we did we stemmed the tide somewhat, but without ever really threatening to get in front. Paul Logue got us off the mark with a well taken point in the first period. A brilliantly taken goal from Mark Healy and 1-2 from Darragh O’Keeffe had the opposition fretting, but they upped their game again and a few quick goals put distance between us. All our players tried their hearts out with Declan O’Grady giving a goalkeeping performance worthy of Nickie Quaid in the second period including a penalty save. It has to be admitted that we have a lot of work to do as our first touch and some basic skills were not up to scratch that night. Training continues on Saturday mornings at 10am on main pitch but it is imperative that our boys put in the hours at home also. Our next outing will be as hosts to Monagea on May 9th with a 6:30 start.

U16 Hurling round 3 29.04.19
Newcastle West 1-9 Mungret/St Paul’s 2-23
Having put in some sterling performances in their first round games v Doon and Monaleen, the boys were always going to be up against it verses a very strong Mungret side on Monday last 29th at home in Pairc na nGael.
Mungret gave an exhibition in long range point scoring barely missing any opportunity in the first half in particular. The Newcastle West boys struggled to get a foothold in the game in the first half but came more into is in the second, with a goal by Con Hayes following a good passage of play. A disappointing performance on the whol, but with the exam break coming up soon, time to regroup and focus on the games later in the season.
Football is next for this panel v St.Kieran’s in two weeks’ time.

While Seánie and Davy (see above Junior B Hurling) may be in the twilight of successful careers the U6s are beginning what we hope will be an enjoyable and successful hurling and football journey. They meet at the ball alley on Fridays from 6pm to 7.15pm with hurling and football on the agenda. They have quality mentors in Pa O’Connor, Mike O’Grady, Donie Gleeson, Jonathan Carey, Michéal Reidy, Brian Fitzgerald. On wards and upwards for the U6s and new players welcome.
Summer Camp
Newcastle West GAA Summer Camp will take place from Monday 1st to Friday 5th July. The camp is available to all children born between 2005 and 2013. The cost for the camp is €65; this includes 5 days of camp and Newcastle West GAA gear of jersey, shorts and socks. There will be a registration night for our summer camp on Thursday May 2nd 7 - 8.30pm upstairs in the club house. Please check ncwgaa.com for details about future registration events as these are an opportunity for the children to try on sample gear for sizing to ensure you purchase the correct gear.
PRIMARY SCHOOLS COACHING
This ongoing and help is always needed, so if you have an hour or so to spare and love the football and hurling, opportunity knocks! However, you must be Garda vetted and be interviewed by the school principal.
REDUNDANT HURLEYS/HELMETS
If there are hurleys and helmets which are no longer needed, especially small hurleys size 22’ down, they’d be very welcome by those coaching smallies i.e. the U6s in the club and schools. They will be added to stock and be available to the learners especially in schools where smallies who are introduced may not have their own gear. Many of those who are introduced to the game in schools do not join the club!
