Match Reports
West Minor Hurling Championship 18.04.19
Newcastle West 4-25 Croagh Kilfinny/Rathkeale 1-4
Croagh/Rathkeale were the visitors to a NCW pitch in very good condition on Friday evening last for the 1st round of the West Minor Hurling championship. The same opponents got the better of us in the West Final of 2018 by a single point and we were well prepared for our first competitive hurling match of the year. How-ever on this occasion our lads were quick out of the traps and we hit our opponents for two early goals which set on our way. Although Croagh/Rathkeale responded with a goal of their own we continued to dominate the first half and led by 3-15 to 1-2 at the break. We continued to push on after the break and added a further 1-10 to our score. While the game was over as a contest long before the final-whistle, the lads continued to work and push themselves to the very end. Overall this was a very good display. Positives was that of our 25 points, 16 were from play from 8 different scorers, the work-rate for the full sixty minutes and disciplined tackling. The quality of our movement and passing was good and we defended solidly when called upon. As in all performances there are areas needing improvement and these will be worked on in training as we face tougher challenges ahead beginning on Friday next with the short journey to neighbours St. Kieran’s.
Team: Oisin O’Sullivan, Andrew Mortell, Jody Woulfe, Michael Blashkiv, Todd Donovan, Michael Cremin, Leon Barry, Ruadhan O’Connor, Brian Foley, Jack Duggan, Luke Gleeson, Ethan Hurley, Conor Walker, Bryan Nix, Jack O’Connor. Subs: Morgan Sheehan for Leon Barry (inj), Killian Collins for Ethan Hurley, Oisin Enright for Jack O Connor (inj.) Ciaran Al Quadi for Michael Cremin.
Our next games are on Friday 26th v St. Kieran’s in Coolcappa in round 2 and Friday 3rd May v Kileedy/Tournafulla in Raheenagh in round 3. Both to be difficult games and will need to be at our best.
U16 Hurling v Monaleen 16.04.19
Monaleen 1-16 Newcastle West 1-13
We made the trip to Monaleen last Tuesday evening(16TH) for the second round of the 16 premier hurling championship. Having started with a great win against Doon the boys were anxious to keep the momentum going despite missing a few players on the evening. The game turned out to be a fantastic game of hurling with very high intensity and very high standard. We started slowly and were down rather unluckily 1-2 to no score before we came into life. In a very good first half we were down 1-8 to 0-7 at half time. Monaleen kicked on after the break and led by 7 pts with 15 to go but then our lads showed what day were made of and after a great 21 from Jack o Connor we were within 2.We then had chances to win it but Monaleen goalie was in inspired form and we ended up losing 1-16 to 1-13. It was tremendous display. Patrick Noonan Sweeney was brave in goals and puckouts were good. Full back line of Ethan Kirwan, Aaron Neville and Sean Geraghty were fantastic especially the second half. Half back line of John Whelan Jack o Connor and Mikael Blaskov were heroic in the second half. Donal Burke and Leon Barry fought like demons in midfield. Half forward line of Eddie Ward, John O’Grady and Tyler Clancy also fought very hard. Full forward line of Con Hayes, Sean Thorley and Brian Coughlan were always dangerous and got some great scores. Paudie Kelly and James Lyons came on and gave their all.
Next up is third round against a very strong Mungret team next Monday the 29th in Newcastle west at 6 30. All support is welcome.
U16 Football v Galbally 22.04.19
Galbally wo Newcastle West
Panel were ready to give it their all on Easter Monday Bank Holiday at home v Galbally but a surprise call awarding a walk over to the team a few hours before thrown in resulted in a team training session instead. Mike O’Leary, Mike McMahon and Austin Geraghty taking the session.
U14 Hurling v Templeglantine 17.04.19
Templeglantine 6-18 Newcastle West 2-6
We played our first round of the u 14 championship last Wednesday against Templeglantine. With a few of our boys missing this was a difficult game as Glantine were going well recently having qualified for the Feile county semi final. We battled away but Glantine always had the upper hand and won 6-18 to 2-6. We have a few good games coming up and with everybody back we should be competitive in the remaining fixtures.

Once again Derry McMahon and his minor panel turn up trumps by participating on behalf of the club in Total Limerick Clean up on Good Friday last. Plenty of bags filled in and around our own Pairc na nGael and the area around the playground and the garden of remembrance. Well done lad’s great pride in club and community.
